Transfer of Undergraduate Credit

Policy

Undergraduate students who have completed coursework at accredited post-secondary institutions in the United States may be considered for transfer credit. Transfer credit evaluations are based on the academic quality, comparability, applicability, and learning outcomes of the coursework in relation to Keuka College degree requirements.

Transfer applicants must provide official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities to be evaluated for admission. A transcript is considered official when it is received directly from a verified and secure source and is transmitted through a secure delivery method that has not been previously accessed or opened. Transcripts cannot be submitted by the student.

  • A maximum of 90 transfer credits can be transferred, if accepted. Acceptable non-traditional transfer credit, such as Credit for Prior Learning, is included in the 90-credit maximum for transfer credit.
  • Transfer credit is accepted for courses that are completed with a grade of “C” or higher (see below for exceptions for students holding an associate and/or bachelor’s degree). Some courses at Keuka College require a minimum grade to be achieved to fulfill the course or program requirement. If through transfer credit the student does not meet the minimum grade requirement, the student would have to repeat the course to meet the prerequisite.

Transfer credits for courses taken more than five years prior to a student’s enrollment will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Students who have credit that is more than 5 years old may have to repeat those courses at the discretion of the division and/or Office of Records and Registration. Acceptance of nursing clinical coursework may be limited to a period of time less than five (5) years and will be reviewed by the division.

  • Grades of P, S, and CR earned in credit-bearing courses are typically not accepted unless the course is internship or experiential learning based. However, this policy may be relaxed for students transferring in credit during pandemic-impacted semesters.
  • Grades earned through transfer credit are not included in the calculation of a student’s Keuka College grade point average (GPA).
  • If a student has taken the same course multiple times at a single institution, they will only receive credit once, unless, by definition, the course is able to be repeated for credit.
  • Coursework completed at institutions outside the United States must be supported by a course-by-course credential and equivalency evaluation conducted by a NACES recognized international credential evaluation service.
  • For health care credentials earned outside the United States, applicants seeking transfer or prior learning credit must have their credentials evaluated, verified, and validated by TruMerit. Credit consideration is subject to receipt of an official TruMerit evaluation and institutional review.
  • Current Keuka College students who wish to take courses at another institution to fulfill degree or graduation requirements must obtain prior approval to do so.

College-Level Standardized Examinations and Dual Enrollment Credit

The College recognizes that many students arrive with college-level knowledge gained prior to enrollment. Credit by examination, such as AP, IB or CLEP examinations or completion of dual enrollment courses offered by a postsecondary institution allows students to earn college credit.

Official AP, CLEP, and IB score reports must be submitted directly to the College by the respective testing agency. For dual-enrollment coursework, students must arrange for an official transcript from the postsecondary institution that awarded the credit to be sent directly to the College. The College will not evaluate or award credit based solely on documentation of examination completion or postsecondary credit appearing on a high school transcript.

Additional sources of credit that may be considered for transfer or award include DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST); Joint Services Transcript (JST) credit recommendations; and Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcripts. Credit from other sources of prior learning may also be considered and is subject to institutional review in accordance with applicable transfer credit policies. As part of the review process, students may be referred to the College's Credit for Prior Learning process for further evaluation.

General Education Compass Curriculum Requirements for Transfer Students

Keuka College recognizes that transfer students may have already demonstrated a breadth of knowledge and experience in the arts and sciences through their prior post-secondary coursework. To support a seamless transfer-process, the following policies apply to students admitted as transfer students:

Students Holding Previously Earned A.A., A.S., A.A.S., or Bachelor’s Degrees

Students pursuing an undergraduate degree at Keuka College who have previously earned an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.), or bachelor's degree from an accredited institution are considered to have fulfilled the requirements of the College’s general education Compass Curriculum. Students holding an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree with at least 30 credits in a variety of disciplines in the liberal arts are likewise considered to have met the requirements. All students must still complete any remaining graduation requirements, including prerequisite and major requirements.

Students who have earned an A.A., A.S., A.A.S. and/or bachelor's degree will receive transfer credit for courses completed with grades of "D-" or higher at the degree-granting institution. When a student transfers credit from multiple institutions and holds an A.A., A.S., A.A.S. and/or bachelor's degree, grades of "D-" or higher will only be accepted only from the institution that conferred the degree.

Certain Keuka College courses require a minimum grade to satisfy course or program requirements. If a transferred course meets the minimum grade for transfer but does not meet the required grade for a specific Keuka College course, it will be accepted as elective credit. In such cases, the student must complete the corresponding course at Keuka College to meet the minimum grade requirement.

Transfer Students Without Previously Earned A.A., A.S., A.A.S. or Bachelor’s Degrees

Transfer students who do not have completed degrees or have completed degrees outside of A.A., A.S , A.A.S. or bachelor's degrees are required to complete the Transfer General Education Compass requirements as indicated by their catalog year. Keuka College does not generally accept external courses as transfer credit towards KC-designated courses (i.e., KC-102 (p. 348), KC-201 (p. Error! Bookmark not defined.), or KC-301).
